Guaranteed one to one care in labour
Guaranteed One to One Midwifery Care Research has shown that women supported in labour by a midwife they know and trust are likely to experience less pain in labour and require fewer drugs, and are more likely to have a positive natural birth experience than other women.
Having a baby is one of the most important life changing events in a woman’s life. Something so important deserves the best support possible. Independent midwives have the time to give you one to one midwifery care for pregnancy, birth and early parenthood. An independent midwife is fully qualified, autonomous practitioner, registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council who have chosen to work outside the NHS in order to offer the continuity of care she feels is vital for women to achieve the birth experiences they want. This is why she will only take on a few women each year. She will usually offer a 24hour on call service.
She will provide individualized care, antenatally, during labour and postnatally for up to six weeks. The care is usually provided in the privacy of the home. She can arrange scans and blood tests as necessary, and will refer to other health care professionals when required. She will offer support and information so women can make informed choices throughout her pregnancy, labour and postnatal time. She will be expert in providing care at home for those women considering a homebirth, and often will provide a birthing pool for use in labour. She can, in many instances support women choosing to have their babies in hospital or birth centres.
How independent midwives provide care. The woman usually makes the first contact by email or telephone. The midwife is likely to offer a “no obligation” consultation where you and your partner can meet her and discuss your needs. She will explain how her practice works, what experience she has, who she works with, and what her fees are. If you decide to engage her she will arrange a booking visit when she will discuss your medical, social and obstetric history, and any other issues pertaining to your pregnancy. She will then plan your care accordingly, and arrange any necessary tests, and scans at times that are convenient to you. Most visits last about an hour to give time to get to know your midwife When your labour starts, your midwife will be available for advice and support and will attend when you feel you need her. She carries all necessary resuscitation equipment and is trained in dealing with emergency situations. She will stay with you though your labour and birth and for at least two hours to ensure you and baby are well and comfortable. She will then provide postnatal care as required.
Why have independent care? Women choose independent care because; they want the opportunity to build up a trusting relationship with the midwife who will provide care for them in order to obtain care in situations usually considered to be outside the “normal” parameters; because of previous negative or traumatic birth experience; because they want flexible, individualised care.
How much does all this cost? Independent midwives fees are usually in the range of £2750, half being paid before the birth of the baby. Flexible payments can be sometimes arranged. Former clients have said that the quality of care is immeasurable, and worth every penny.
